The study found that stormwater contributes significantly more microplastics to the Bay than treated wastewater, with stormwater containing 300 times higher concentrations . This is largely because stormwater often flows directly into the Bay without treatment, carrying with it urban debris and pollutants. Microplastics have been detected in the Bay's surface waters, sediments, and even within local fish species, indicating their pervasive presence in the ecosystem.
The potential health impacts of microplastics on humans are still being studied, but concerns include ingestion through seafood and inhalation of airborne particles, which may lead to respiratory issues and other health problems .
